I can no longer download anything not previously purchase from the App Store using Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). In particular, I'm trying to download a newer OS, and 10.11/El Capitan is the newest one that will run on my Mac. However, even though all of my payment/billing info is current on my Apple ID, attempting to "Get" El Capitan as shown on this page How to download OS X El Capitan - Apple Support, doesn't work, it gives me an error saying "Software Update Required. To make changes to your payment information, you need to upgrade you mac to the latest version of macOS". I presume this is related to the security changes made to AppleID&App Store on 30-Jun-2018. My login an password are correct, as you can see from my ability to login and post this message.
I think it is something to do with Apple changing the way things are logged in from 30 June 2018 as you have discovered where anything below certain OS is rejected when trying to make apple id log ins and 10.6 is below that requirement.
One point I want to make: Some have commented that deleting InstallInfo.plist prevented a successful bootable USB from being made. This is because they are deleting InstallInfo.plist directly from the downloaded install app as opposed to deleting it from the newly created bootable USB. in other words, create bootable USB and then delete InstallInfo.plist from the bootable usb.
I HIGHLY recommend to everyone that they always download the installer for every macOS version regardless of whether they plan to use it. Then, copy that installer to a safe place outside of /Applications so that Apple, in all its wisdom, does not delete it for you. I got severely stung back with Leopard/Snow Leopard in that I could not upgrade Leopard to the current version without first upgrading to Snow Leopard, which the Apple Store did not carry anymore (they directed me to a third part vendor). I ended up buying Snow Leopard from a Mac specialty store.
Same error message in Terminal when trying to create a USB installer from the file downloaded from the Sierra link provided. No problem creating the same with El Capitan installer file. Also got error when trying to build a Sierra installer with Install Disk Creator app.
This message usually shows up as a sheet that drops down from the macOS or OS X installer shortly after you start the install process. It may seem odd but the usual cause is a corrupt installer, and simply deleting the installer app and downloading a new copy will likely fix the issue. The error message seems to occur most often when the Mac installer is downloaded from a third-party site. This is a good reason to download the official copy from the Mac App Store or join the free public beta program if you want to try out a new version of the Mac OS early.
Internet restores are notoriously flacky, and should not be depended on. If you can restore your drive, you should download a copy of the desired version of the macOS. It will land in your applications folder. You can run the installer from there and erase your drive if you want to do a clean install.
The issue might be that you are downloading from an old operating system such as Yosemite to Catalina directly and that will not work. What you will need to do is first upgrade the system to the older version, El Capitan and then upgrade again to Catalina.
You will not find El Capitan download link available on the regular app store so you will have to go to the following link on the official apple website and then scroll down to step 4 and download El Capitan.
Am trying to install a previous version on a new volume and keep getting an error after the install file has downloaded.Turn on mac holding down the correct keys.Black screen appears asking to select network.Network selected and file begins to download.Download finishes and the message is shownapple.com/support -1008f
As with most upgrades of Mac OS X, new wallpapers are available. There are new wallpapers in the Nature (two of which are of snow leopards), Plants and Black and White sub-folders under the Apple folder. Furthermore, there are new Apple wallpaper sub-folders with multiple wallpapers:
Nevertheless, keep in mind that if you visit developer.apple.com/downloads, you can only find 10.3-10.6 OS X operating systems there. Newer versions are not available because starting Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.7, the App Store has become the only source of updating Apple OS versions.
Before you do it, the best advice is to back your Mac up so your most important files stay intact. In addition to that, it makes sense to clean up your Mac from old system junk files and application leftovers. The easiest way to do it is to run CleanMyMac X on your computer (download it for free here).
Ideally, a good DVD ripper can extract digital files from DVDs to the hard drive in such a way as to free up space in your room and protect cherished discs against scratch or damage. It further extends the viewing option to your Macbook, iMac, iPhone, iPad, or any other media player. Therefore, you won't drop the DVD in the disc drive, download an MPEG2 decoder, or take along the bulky DVDs anymore. Therefore, we've compiled a list of 10 best free DVD ripper software for Mac. Keep reading.
iSuper DVD Ripper is a useful program for converting homemade DVDs on MacBook Pro, Air, and iMac. It's safe and free to download from the Mac App Store. You can use it to rip non-protected DVDs to MP4, MOV, AVI, WMV, MKV, FLV, M4V, HD MP4, HD AVI, HD MKV, HD WMV, and extract the DVD audio in MP3, AAC, WMA, etc.
The following was culled from Apple's support downloads page, and as such, some of the dates may be off just a bit. If you know for certain that something is incorrect, please let me know and I'll get it fixed. (Scroll to see all entries.)
This may be useful to some. Older versions of macOS can be downloaded from the App Store. As of this writting you can get older versions of macOS going back to 10.13 High Sierra. App Store searches will only find the current shipping versions of macOS. For older versions you will need to know the direct App Store link. This article explains how to get it:
The Python script used to convert the extracted .plist file into Hashcat's preferred format was taken from the Empire framework and can be found on GitHub. Open a Terminal and download the hashdump script with the following curl command. The -o argument will save the script with the "hashdump.py" file name.
The dictionary attack, or "straight mode," is specified using the -a 0 argument. The macOS-specific hashing mode is enabled using the -m 7100 argument and is required for all macOS hashes extracted from version 10.8 or later. To improve Hashcat's overall performance, set the -w (or --workload-profile) to 4, to maximize the cracking speed. Finally, the --potfile-path argument is used to save the cracked hash to the specified file.
I have upgraded to high Sierra(Unsupported OS) from el capitan (which is max supported OS on this Mac). I found it running fine except for camera hardware and mic. And sometimes it's laggy too. So I decided to downgrade. I tried to command+R to re install from recovery mac os. But don't work. Show's High Sierra to download and continue. Further it is also unable to download.
Now again as per the apple service care, I followed the instructions to internet recovery. I erased(using DiskStation utility in boot) the Macintosh HD all data, to clean install. And now when I tried to reinstall OS from recovery Mac OS. Still the same issue, takes me to the page High Sierra download and that won't do.
Thanks for the great article. One practical thing missing, though, is mention of ease of transfer from itunes to whichever new program is chosen. I use itunes solely to listen to music on my Windows laptop, and ocassionally to download/upload music to my phone. I have a huge library and many different playlists.
Public beta testers can download the macOS 13 Ventura update from the Software Update section of the System Preferences app after installing the proper profile from Apple's beta software website.
The next "bump" in the road was MySQLdb. This Python DB API is needed to let Python (and Django) interact with MySQL properly. Since I installed (compiled) MySQLdb for the 32 bit version of MySQL, I had a hunch this one was not going to work anymore either. The first thing I tried was simple reinstalling MySQLdb (see Installing MySQLdb for more information). The installer was not too happy however and kept throwing error messages at me.Solution: First, make sure you have the GCC compiler installed. You can install Xcode (Apple's developer software) for this. You can download this from Apple, but I remember spotting it on the Snow Leopard DVD (Optional Installs). However, it turned out that GCC has been updated by Apple and somehow my MySQLdb installer did not seem appreciate that. Eventually I got this working, but I am not even sure how. One possible solution might have been adding to my .bash_profile:
Open About this Mac from the Apple menu bar or go to support.apple.com to find out if your Mac has an Apple M1 chip or T2 security chip. Follow the instructions to boot into the Recovery Mode depending on the specifications of your Mac.
